Pakistan is currently experiencing a significant growth in entrepreneurship, due to which start-ups are mushrooming across the country. However, after the excitement of creating a novel product/ service stabilises and the humdrum of running the business sets in, founders of start-ups find themselves dealing with the unenviable task of managing their human resources. Here are three key challenges they face: Getting the right resource. Ascertaining the skill set needed for the fledgling enterprise is the easy part, but how do you find a potential team member who is as passionate about the idea as you are? Founders need clarity to recognise that a good quality resource is one who delivers results, and an ideal resource is merely a mythical extension of their own selves Learning in real time. Young founders are often new entrants into the corporate world and struggle with figuring out how to be managers when they have little work experience. Moreover, a new creation means there are no prior prototypes to refer to so founders learn to overcome stumbling blocks with their teams. The good news is that cohesive learning leads to high performance. Dealing with high turnover. The cost of employee turnover is incredibly steep for start-ups. A team member's exit can hamper the pace of the product launch and demoralise the whole team. Since there are no contractual bindings, founders cannot legally retain a resource, nor can they ever be sure of intellectual property sanctity. Grappling on their own, founders need to reach out to incubators and industry leaders to solve this conundrum. Ultimately, the founder and owner of the start-up also become the line manager, administrator, safety advisor, mentor and surrogate parent. The sitcom-like culture you imagined while working on your dream idea is in reality a daily monitoring of ripostes and plumbing issues.
